The whole idea of G-20Y Summit is that young people bring their ideas that might be controversial, that might be a little provocative, but are fresh. And they share it with the business community. I think and I hope that what we accomplished during these three days will actually be meaningful and will impact the decisions and discussion of G20 leaders.
I just have a habit – wherever someone asks “who?”, I just put my hand up. And this is not the best habit I have but when they asked the volunteer to be Co-Chair – I just thought that I have relevant experience as a former consultant, as a former Head of Strategy of VTB group and a business leader now. I think I have the relevant experience to talk about financial stability and financial regulation, which was the topic of our committee. And I think it’s a very important topic and it’s really one of the top items on G-20Y Summits agenda. Because without financial stability as we’ve seen before it’s really impossible to deliver growth, to deliver prosperity. I really enjoyed working with our committee members, we had ten people from different countries, different economies: Europe, UK, Russia, Malaysia, and Japan. It was interesting to see what similarities we have, what differences we have and different and similar ideas that we share. I think it really enriched my understanding of the industry at the global level and I believe we were able to deliver some meaningful and practical recommendations.
The most interesting moment for me of the Summit was the dancing master-class, because I’d never thought that you can learn how to dance tango in 30 minutes. I think our teachers did a very good job: very simple moves that everybody could repeat and learn within 30 minutes. It was a very good G-20Y and a very fast delivery of results.

So bringing together business leaders from different industries, geographies, different levels across the G20 – this is interesting. Arriving here I saw very fascinating group of people, acting together, discussing together and for me the first step towards understanding G-20Y was to see that this is like a market place where international global people can, without borders in thinking, be together and this is for me the most important aspect.

The working process was wonderful. Because we can see a lot of people from other countries: Brazil, from Malaysia, even from UK –a UK person works in China, he shared his experience in China and also from US. We share all information and all the practices of how to fight corruption in our country. We are very surprised that there is actually only one conference – United Nation Conference about fighting corruption and also UOECD conference against bribery. But I think not all the countries have ratified and implemented the conference, maybe we should give some views, some recommendations that all G20 countries and other countries can implement the United Nation Conference and UOECD conference against bribery. There have been discussions that fighting corruption, money laundering and also bribery and financial terrorism are linked together, so every country should be aware about these issues, this not only a problem of developed countries.
My president attended G-20Y Summit last year in Mexico, he asked senior level manager in Bank Mandiri, he shared his views of G20 of last years, so this is a good opportunity. We are going to send our senior manager to G-20Y Summit.

I think G-20Y is such an important event in the world because as the young leaders we have to tell the world what we think and what we should accomplish in the next few years, because we have a responsibility to make things change and make a better world.
I worked on the “City of tomorrow” Committee – we had a broad issue to talk about, we tried to figure out what the city of tomorrow would be like and one of the things that I’m very happy to see in the result is that we talked about local communities – how we should design the cities of tomorrow with strong local communities where you can actually get involved as a citizen in your community to share services and actually go further with the challenges the city now faces.
The G-20Y events are nice because you actually have a lot of real work during the day it's so much fun to work with a bunch of people from all around the world with different backgrounds – this is very interesting. And then at night you can socialize, talk to those same people by the way with a more personal feel – this makes the entire experience, so much fun.
My favorite event was the opening Gala ceremony. Our company Desjardins, we got an award for our 3-year friendship with the G-20Y. So it was quite nice experience for us to receive that award.

There was no question of whether to participate or not actually when the invitation arrived because, for our company, it is incredibly important what exactly is on G20 agenda, not only this year, but in general. Over the last period of time Unilever was Co-Chairing the “Food security” Committee on the B20 initiatives in Rio with a quite valuable contribution, I hope, to the Communiqué which was produced by this committee. For us food security is not just an empty word and we really look to this agenda and how it’s being approach by the government on the G20 level.
What was specifically interesting about the Summit, actually, was the combination of participants which attended. The executive level of the biggest international corporations and some of the real big and significant Russian corporations, as soon as we are in Russia we are speaking about this, representatives of the international non-governmental organizations as well. I believe, this is an incredible group of people, I believe, team of people, who got together in St. Petersburg are really invested their time, not having to open e-mail and stuff which we left behind in office, but really invested our time, being focused on the agenda, which is with us today; and really trying to share the best ideas, many fresh ideas by the way, the most creative ideas I’ve ever heard, on those important areas of real G20 interests.
The program is really sophisticated: dance master-classes, the whole atmosphere of the classical music, combination of it and really amazing atmosphere of the city itself. It's the best season in the city. I believe it's something that going to be quite memorable.

In my eyes, the G-20Y Summit is a unique opportunity to interact and communicate to motivated young ambitious c-executives; and to also interact with people from other business sectors.
I think it is super important to have the young generation of c-executives round one table at such aconference to exchange ideas,and to forward these ideas to those who are really on the steering-wheel regarding the future of our planet. I believe by havingworked out our papers we can somehow, let’s say contribute to the future and a better development of the world, whereby in our working group`s case especially regarding the financial world.
I believe it was quite useful, quite interesting, even if we were discussing theoretical topics mainly,but this is the purpose of this one. It was in any case also interconnected withreal life and with taking concrete action in the future. I was also able to extend my network, meet interesting people, which I will follow up with in the future. I found it quite useful, also to experience St. Petersburg, which is truly a nice place for this event. I also enjoyed very much the side events.
My favorite one was the yachting regatta – it was really good fun. We had perfect weather, even if we were lacking wind, so we were not really going that fast, but nevertheless it was good fun. Unfortunately we only got the second place – so we were the first loser. But nevertheless it was not really about competition – it was much more about fun and communication. For me it was alsoa nice opportunity to have my daily swim in the Gulf of Finland. I really enjoyed it very much.

Outcomes of the G-20Y Summit 2016: Creating Jobs Committee

On September 22nd – 24th, the Creating Jobs Committee of the G-20Y Summit 2016 convened to address the significant challenges faced in the area of job creation. As the world’s population continues to grow, so do the strains on economic growth, including the availability, quality, and types of jobs. The current population of approximately 7.5 billion includes approximately 4.5 billion people eligible to work. However, this 4.5 billion does not include the population segments of women and individuals over the age of 65 that are often not taken into account when thinking about jobs and job creation. This creates an immediate need to address the ways we may create 1.7 billion new jobs and foster the inclusion of women and workers over the age of 65 into the workforce, all while ensuring job stability and security for another approximately 3 billion workers.
The Sustainable Development Goal #8 from the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda clearly aligns achievement of sustainable economic growth with “full and productive employment and decent work for all”. This goal also speaks to the underlying shift in the very nature of work itself. Work is being redefined as the idea of creating a ‘fulfilling work life’ through satisfying and productive work over the full span of a person’s lifetime, as well as through major technological breakthroughs. In light of this, and building off of the work completed at the G-20Y Summit 2015, the 2016 agenda for the Committee included covering three main areas of focus: women’s empowerment and gender equality, entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship, and technology.
On day one of the G-20Y Summit 2016, the Committee heard from Jacques Bughin, Director and Senior Partner, McKinsey Global Institute. He spoke to the changing nature of work and the growing divide between the evolution we’re experiencing in the workplace and the orthodoxies we currently have in place that no longer support our working lives. The question, he proposed, isn’t really about creating jobs but rather about creating jobs that are productive enough to allow for engagement with the economy (creating demand for products) by all workers and also having the right workers in the right roles. He highlighted the ways in which technology is impacting, especially as automation hollows out the middle of the skill distribution by replacing mid-level workers. This requires an increase in ‘creative’ work as these types of tasks are not easily replaced by automation. Technology also enables flexibility in work leading to an increase in self-employment and multiple jobs per worker (especially among millennials). He noted that existing learning and training programs are not meeting the needs of displaced workers, thereby contributing to the growing skill gap and their continued unemployment; the advent of AI (artificial intelligence) may lead to worker substitution, thereby opening up pathways to the creation of entirely new kinds of work for those displaced workers. Ultimately, addressing these impacts requires a drastic paradigm shift.
Through the discussion following the presentation, the entire group came to agreement that these impacts are symptoms of the underlying problem of how will work look in the future (and is beginning to look now). Rather than resisting this change, we should be thinking of how people’s meaningful employment in the future can be accommodated in a world where technology has dramatically changed the scope of what humans do in the workplace (tasks performed). Ultimately we need to redefine the notion of ‘full employment’ so that it takes into account not just those working in the traditional model of employer and employee engagement, but rather all those whose work is productive and valuable to themselves and to society at large. It is no longer sustainable to wring our hands over technology ‘taking’ our jobs. We are much better served by finding ways for all people to contribute meaningfully to society – in other words, achieving optimum employment.
Mr. Peter Cheese - CEO from Chartered Institute of Personnel Development presented the trends of future jobs and labor market, emphasising that the jobs and labour markets in recent years have been going through significant change, and there are now strong emergent trends that will shape the future nature of jobs possibly more significantly than we have ever seen. Many are talking of a fourth industrial age when technology, the internet of things, robotics and artificial intelligence start to significantly reshape many jobs, organizations, and sectors. In addition, he stressed that with all these trends, there is a need for more strategic thinking and joined up approaches between governments, education, organizations, and individuals, and where the responsibilities and responses lie.
Dr. Thannaletchimy Thanagopal – Advisor from International Organization of Employers (IOE) also presented to the Committee a few points related to the Sustainable Development Goal #8 from the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and emphasized that the IOE sees the Agenda 2030 implementation as an opportunity to assert a private sector leadership where appropriate on key issues of national development agenda. In addition, she mentioned the International Labour Organisation’s (IOE) role and approach in promoting and assisting member States’ efforts to implement the Agenda 2030.
Over days 2 and 3, the group collaborated on the three sub-topics that form the key issues and themes of the Committee Perspectives. The first topic reviewed was women’s empowerment and gender equality. According to a 2015 study done by McKinsey, 1 million girls a year are not even born due to sex selective abortion and 2/3 of all illiterate adults are women. Women are routinely excluded from politics and political discourse as these are traditionally spheres of influence controlled by men; however, it has been shown that when women are included in politics there is an increase in collaboration, a decrease in polarisation, and more legislation aimed at addressing issues in education, race, and gender are proposed. The continued exclusion of women from the workforce is leading to the potential loss of up to 12 trillion dollars in global growth. Leaving women out of the equation is no longer a sustainable option.
The recommended action to address this exclusion is one of advocacy, specifically advocacy by men. As men are the current leaders of the social, political, economic, and religious spheres of life, success in changing the working lives (and lives in general) of women cannot be achieved without their support. It was argued that an impactful way to achieve this advocacy could be to start with industry organizations at the individual sector level. Here the argument can be made that these changes are material to businesses and the existing environment of competition between organisations can lead to a race toward success on advocacy initiatives.
While everyone agreed in general with the baseline arguments of the sub-topic, it was noted that what we’re really talking about here is changes in values and belief systems, which is possibly outside of the sphere of influence of the G-20Y Summit. It was also noted that it is difficult to superimpose culture onto values – meaning that what works in one area won’t necessarily be a fit somewhere else. One member argued strongly for the inclusion of specific points in the perspective around targets and metrics in the workplace related to these issues, while it was noted by another member that in their geography this type of action isn’t legal. In the end it was agreed that ‘women in the workforce are an untapped market’ and that this business case could ultimately be used to bring about the societal changes underlying this reality.
The second topic reviewed was entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship. At its core, entrepreneurship is fundamental to the human experience and something many people engage in without even knowing what it is. The micro economy is powered when individuals have the opportunity to be creative and passionate about resolving the issues present in their communities – in other words, when innovation and entrepreneurship flourish. It is imperative to enable entrepreneurship to assist in the creation of jobs globally, which requires not only increasing education about entrepreneurship but also removing the barriers to entry of entrepreneurship for all. Barriers to entrepreneurship include lack of access to the concepts of entrepreneurship; lack of access to financing for aspiring entrepreneurs; educational systems and models that do not align with the needs of entrepreneurs and do not prepare students to become entrepreneurs; regulations that stand in direct opposition to fostering growth through entrepreneurship; and businesses not enabling the environment for intrapreneurship within their own ranks.
It was proposed that entrepreneurship networks and ecosystems must be created to address the systemic barriers noted above. Fundamentally, the answer to the entrepreneurship issue is one of ecosystem – if we can create the right ecosystem the positive results of entrepreneurship will flow. This means businesses need to celebrate failing forward, lobby for changes in regulation through local policy makers, and create within their own organisations the infrastructure for intrapreneurship as well. It also implies that businesses must partner with educational systems to ensure they are including new skills in their curriculums that support the needs of entrepreneurs and ensure exposure to entrepreneurship concepts. One Committee member noted that we also need to disrupt the notion of regulation coming from the government. If we talk about new business models, why not talk about new regulation models, too? Ultimately there needs to be more interaction between the spheres of business, government, and education to bring about the changes necessary to drive entrepreneurship.
The final topic reviewed by the Committee was that of technology. The impacts of technology on the world of work can be aligned under three main points: automation and new technologies transforming the ways in which people work (what work humans do); enablement of globalisation and flexibility challenging the notion of the company itself (eg: remote work, free-lance work, multiple jobs per worker, etc.); and reskilling of displaced workers through access to technology education. These impacts have led to a reduction in the expectation of long term employment with single employer. While this is often initially met with consternation, a more optimistic take on the situation is that this uncoupling of employers and employees may indeed open up greater opportunities for growth and freedom for workers, leading to more ‘fulfilling work lives’ and ultimately greater productivity. If we can learn to embrace the changes being thrust upon us by technology, we may position ourselves to create a better world at the end of this technological transition.
However, in order to create that better world we must also prepare ourselves for it. Some research suggests that up to 78% of job activities will soon be replaced by automation, thereby displacing workers who currently complete those activities. It is imperative that we reskill displaced workers to re-enter the workforce in jobs that are not being eliminated by automation (ie: creative jobs, job involving interpersonal interactions, etc.) and prepare them for jobs that do not yet exist, but that will appear as a result of automation and AI.
The Committee noted that it is also important, however, to step back and ensure the ways these impacts express themselves in the developed versus developing world are considered. There is a difference in these impacts for the digitally privileged – a group of which 60% of the world is not a part. One Committee member noted that in some instances the developing world is addressing basic problems with tech driven solutions, often leapfrogging past traditional forms of growth. The developed world, on the other hand, is sometimes held back from growth in places where there is a legacy of strict workplace regulations.
Two main recommendations came out of the discussion surrounding technology: the impact and opportunity of technology must be studied at a global level by impact organizations such as the UN and ILO; and it is imperative to invest in human capital (reskilling workers and training teachers) to address the skill needs of the future created by changes in technology. It was noted that the second recommendation in particular is truly a unifying need across all three of the sub-topics explored by the committee. There was some debate about whether or not this could be addressed through an incremental, entrepreneurial approach, with the group eventually agreeing that this would likely be the best approach.
The Committee concluded with three points; technology and education are key enablers of progress in the realm of job creation; there is an undeniable link between the spheres of technology, education, and business that must be leveraged in order to bring about the necessary changes needed to ensure we achieve a ‘fulfilling work life’ for all; and the fastest way forward is through personal and professional advocacy on the part of those with the influence to bring about change. It was agreed that a public/private/non-profit partnership must be created to tackle the immense task of completely overhauling the educational systems of the world and that this overhaul is a key driver in the success of all other job creation initiatives. Ultimately, however, none of this can be accomplished if individuals do not take it upon themselves to advocate and influence for action within their spheres of influence.
To that end, the Committee synthesized individual recommendations of the sub-topics into the final recommendations for impact in their Perspectives. The Committee strongly believes, as do I, that immediate action on these Perspectives will position us not only for a better future, but for a future where all people are free to engage in fulfilling work lives.
