The whole idea of G-20Y Summit is that young people bring their ideas that might be controversial, that might be a little provocative, but are fresh. And they share it with the business community. I think and I hope that what we accomplished during these three days will actually be meaningful and will impact the decisions and discussion of G20 leaders.
I just have a habit – wherever someone asks “who?”, I just put my hand up. And this is not the best habit I have but when they asked the volunteer to be Co-Chair – I just thought that I have relevant experience as a former consultant, as a former Head of Strategy of VTB group and a business leader now. I think I have the relevant experience to talk about financial stability and financial regulation, which was the topic of our committee. And I think it’s a very important topic and it’s really one of the top items on G-20Y Summits agenda. Because without financial stability as we’ve seen before it’s really impossible to deliver growth, to deliver prosperity. I really enjoyed working with our committee members, we had ten people from different countries, different economies: Europe, UK, Russia, Malaysia, and Japan. It was interesting to see what similarities we have, what differences we have and different and similar ideas that we share. I think it really enriched my understanding of the industry at the global level and I believe we were able to deliver some meaningful and practical recommendations.
The most interesting moment for me of the Summit was the dancing master-class, because I’d never thought that you can learn how to dance tango in 30 minutes. I think our teachers did a very good job: very simple moves that everybody could repeat and learn within 30 minutes. It was a very good G-20Y and a very fast delivery of results.

I think it's great to have young business leaders, participating in the G-20Y Summit, who come together from a broad variety of expertise and cultural background, and who come together to discuss certain topics of particularly interest at these times and who try to find the solutions. You have many business meetings during the year, you have many seminars where you learn something, but these are always in your industry with the same people talking about the same topics. So bringing together business leaders from different industries, geographies, different levels across the G20 – this is interesting. Arriving here I saw very fascinating group of people, acting together, discussing together and for me the first step towards understanding G-20Y was to see that this is like a market place where international global people can, without borders in thinking, be together and this is for me the most important aspect.

The working process was wonderful. Because we can see a lot of people from other countries: Brazil, from Malaysia, even from UK –a UK person works in China, he shared his experience in China and also from US. We share all information and all the practices of how to fight corruption in our country. We are very surprised that there is actually only one conference – United Nation Conference about fighting corruption and also UOECD conference against bribery. But I think not all the countries have ratified and implemented the conference, maybe we should give some views, some recommendations that all G20 countries and other countries can implement the United Nation Conference and UOECD conference against bribery. There have been discussions that fighting corruption, money laundering and also bribery and financial terrorism are linked together, so every country should be aware about these issues, this not only a problem of developed countries.
My president attended G-20Y Summit last year in Mexico, he asked senior level manager in Bank Mandiri, he shared his views of G20 of last years, so this is a good opportunity. We are going to send our senior manager to G-20Y Summit.
I think it's a very good opportunity for me to attend G-20Y Summit. This is first time I have attended an international Summit with different views and different subjects. I usually attend workshops or meetings about banking, just only banking but there are more issues we can discuss together.

I think G-20Y is such an important event in the world because as the young leaders we have to tell the world what we think and what we should accomplish in the next few years, because we have a responsibility to make things change and make a better world.
I worked on the “City of tomorrow” Committee – we had a broad issue to talk about, we tried to figure out what the city of tomorrow would be like and one of the things that I’m very happy to see in the result is that we talked about local communities – how we should design the cities of tomorrow with strong local communities where you can actually get involved as a citizen in your community to share services and actually go further with the challenges the city now faces.
The G-20Y events are nice because you actually have a lot of real work during the day it's so much fun to work with a bunch of people from all around the world with different backgrounds – this is very interesting. And then at night you can socialize, talk to those same people by the way with a more personal feel – this makes the entire experience, so much fun.
My favorite event was the opening Gala ceremony. Our company Desjardins, we got an award for our 3-year friendship with the G-20Y. So it was quite nice experience for us to receive that award.

There was no question of whether to participate or not actually when the invitation arrived because, for our company, it is incredibly important what exactly is on G20 agenda, not only this year, but in general. Over the last period of time Unilever was Co-Chairing the “Food security” Committee on the B20 initiatives in Rio with a quite valuable contribution, I hope, to the Communiqué which was produced by this committee. For us food security is not just an empty word and we really look to this agenda and how it’s being approach by the government on the G20 level.
What was specifically interesting about the Summit, actually, was the combination of participants which attended. The executive level of the biggest international corporations and some of the real big and significant Russian corporations, as soon as we are in Russia we are speaking about this, representatives of the international non-governmental organizations as well. I believe, this is an incredible group of people, I believe, team of people, who got together in St. Petersburg are really invested their time, not having to open e-mail and stuff which we left behind in office, but really invested our time, being focused on the agenda, which is with us today; and really trying to share the best ideas, many fresh ideas by the way, the most creative ideas I’ve ever heard, on those important areas of real G20 interests.
The program is really sophisticated: dance master-classes, the whole atmosphere of the classical music, combination of it and really amazing atmosphere of the city itself. It's the best season in the city. I believe it's something that going to be quite memorable.

In my eyes, the G-20Y Summit is a unique opportunity to interact and communicate to motivated young ambitious c-executives; and to also interact with people from other business sectors.
I think it is super important to have the young generation of c-executives round one table at such aconference to exchange ideas,and to forward these ideas to those who are really on the steering-wheel regarding the future of our planet. I believe by havingworked out our papers we can somehow, let’s say contribute to the future and a better development of the world, whereby in our working group`s case especially regarding the financial world.
I believe it was quite useful, quite interesting, even if we were discussing theoretical topics mainly,but this is the purpose of this one. It was in any case also interconnected withreal life and with taking concrete action in the future. I was also able to extend my network, meet interesting people, which I will follow up with in the future. I found it quite useful, also to experience St. Petersburg, which is truly a nice place for this event. I also enjoyed very much the side events.
My favorite one was the yachting regatta – it was really good fun. We had perfect weather, even if we were lacking wind, so we were not really going that fast, but nevertheless it was good fun. Unfortunately we only got the second place – so we were the first loser. But nevertheless it was not really about competition – it was much more about fun and communication. For me it was alsoa nice opportunity to have my daily swim in the Gulf of Finland. I really enjoyed it very much.

Today’s realities cause us to rethink what the Creation of Jobs means. Does it mean the creation of jobs for all? All for those who are in need? Do we have to think about creating jobs for those who do not want to work? Or should we rather start thinking about the guaranteed income?
Or should we go deeper and look into the nature of jobs and of the role the job plays in the life of a human? Should we still think in terms of Job, or Occupation, or Employment? Or should we move forward and touch the concept of Fulfillment (thinking about fulfilling working lives)?
During the G-20Y Summit 2017 the Creating Jobs Committee gathered to address the significant challenges faced in the area of job creation. All the Committee members agreed that the creation of reliable and sustainable jobs will require nation states and international organizations to provide a baseline infrastructure that can nurture job creation in the 21st century. This basic infrastructure does not only include access to basic necessities such as clean water and quality food but also the basic technological platforms for job creation, including efficient access to the internet. Otherwise society risks leaving behind half of the world’s population simply because they do not have access to the internet. This is an essential requirement for job and opportunity growth and continuous learning.
In light of this, and building off of the work completed by the Committee at the previous G-20Y Summits, the 2017 agenda for the Committee included covering the following main areas of focus: How to make every human happy giving him/her a meaningful job/occupation that in the same time matters and is economically and socially effective,
How to reach the diversity (looking from the different angles such as countries, organizations, ages/generations, genders),
The adaptation of the educational and political systems towards the new challenges coming from the new organizational models (sharing and gig economy, peer-to-peer, holocracies),
Recognising the new rules of play for the humanity stepped in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
On day one of the G-20Y Summit 2017, the Committee heard from Jacques Bughin - Director and Senior Partner, McKinsey Global Institute. He spoke on the Artificial intelligence problematic and raised few questions. In particular, he stressed that artificial intelligence holds the picture to deliver smart capital, likely in substitution to many tasks and job occupations-- since a long time, technology has killed some occupations, but at the end, created new types of jobs, and generates enough productivity and rents to reboost economies and employment. He raised the question how different is it this time? Dr. Bughin also brought to the discussion detailed perspective of how tech has played in economies in recent years, how digital tech in particular is playing ,and how artificial intelligence can further play.
Mr. Mark Purdy – Managing Director, Chief Economist, Accenture Research, also addressed to the Committee members the question whether the rise of smart machines is a game over for the human workforce. He highlighted that the arrival of digital technologies has raised concerns that labor will become less and less important and that more and more workers will be replaced by machines. Economists have made similar claims in the past. Going back to the 1930s, Keynes for example, famously foresaw the steady increase in per capita income in the 20th century from the introduction of new technologies, but incorrectly predicted that this would create widespread technological unemployment as machines replaced men. Mr. Purdy mentioned that throughout the industrial revolutions we’ve seen technology has made some labour redundant, but also led to the creation of new labour-intensive jobs. The question is will it be different this time around? Does the self-learning nature of these new technologies mean that modern growth will produce fewer jobs? On embarking on the possible creative destruction of jobs, one thing is for sure…..Disruption! Such transitions can be painful so it is vital we begin engaging in appropriate business and policy discussions to mitigate the downside risks.
Through the discussion following the presentation, the entire group came to agreement that these impacts are symptoms of the underlying problem of how will work look in the future (and is beginning to look now). Rather than resisting this change, we should be thinking of how people’s meaningful employment in the future can be accommodated in a world where technology has dramatically changed the scope of what humans do in the workplace (tasks performed). Ultimately leading governments, private employers and academic institutions must work together to redefine the functional skills that are required today and that will be required in the medium-term. Such skills will require at least minimum levels of proficiency in mathematics, language, understanding of customer relations, IT literacy and imaging decoding as well as critical thinking and analytical skills. Many of these skills will be required to interface and interact with an increasing number of smart apps and intelligent supply chain and information networks. Successful adaptation will depend on the employers’ and employees’ ability to reskill on a very frequent basis; i.e. to abandon old tasks while continuously mastering new ones.
Over days 2 and 3, the group collaborated to discuss the issue of the engagement by employers and defined the formula that was included into Committee’s final Perspectives.
In particular it was stressed that by some estimates only 13% of employees feel currently engaged at work. Current trends strongly suggest that the following attributes will be essential to attract, develop and retain the talent of the future:
- Purpose ripens the conviction that your work matters. For most partners interest without purpose will be nearly impossible to sustain for a lifetime. It will be therefore imperative that partners do identify their life with their employers.
- Motivation is necessary to support perseverance. It is critically important to learn, to keep going in the face of adversity even when we have doubts. Matching jobs and tasks with the partners’ attention and imagination is a good idea. It will not guarantee happiness, activity fulfilment and success but it will greatly improve the chances of sustainable and productive employment.
- Shared values.
- Whole life (‘work well/ be well’). Physical and mind wellness, including organised full life experiences, e.g. organised sports, cultural and artistic events as well as continuous learning including social inclusion.
- Trust will be an essential component of all interactions/ relationships the such as employer/ employee relationship.
The Committee has discussed whether it is possible to represent the nature of Trust in a formula:

C = Credibility (reputation, brand, truthful merit based dialog)
R = Reliability (delivering on commitment)
I = Intimacy (more knowledge sharing)
SO = Self Orientation (self vs common benefit)
While everyone agreed in general that the job creation will continue to depend on economic growth, small family owned businesses are likely to play a more important role in job creation. Given the fact there are 1,5 billion vulnerable workers and 200 million people unemployed, the baseline infrastructure discussed above is clearly the top priority for job creation. Finally the governments and local regulatory bodies will need to foster the functioning of an efficient market, urban planning, and if necessary intervene to prevent the creation of oligopolies, which coupled with automation and large economies of scope and scale have the potential of creating great damage to the job market.
One important recommendation came out of the discussion states that job creation will depend on continuous investment in education. To that end, the Committee believes that education redesign must include formal academic training, informal and technical/ data information training. In areas such as (in order of priority) information, financial activities, professional and business services, manufacturing, construction, education and health services, trade, transportation and utilities and leisure/ hospitality.
It will be imperative to ensure flexible, agile, continuous lifelong learning, starting with early childhood education. This will help people adapt to different changing roles and positions in a wide range of occupations.
However one more part – missing now in most types of education – will be needed in the future and is needed already today. The Committee members have concluded that the overwhelming information leads us to the need of Unlearning. Too much skills and knowledge prevent one from being very flexible and fast adopting, so special courses and clues on how to Unlearn (or Re-learn) are coming on the surface.
The Committee concluded stating that all job creators must be attuned to the immediate and changing needs, wants and aspirations of their employees/ associates/ partners. A world of super transparency will provide most employees with an unparalleled number of opportunities to collaborate. This will require the incorporation of continuous feedback and acknowledgement of the employees.
The Term Chair of the Creating Jobs Committee Mrs. Olga Ryabova stressed that:
"Very important feature of the Summit 2017 is that we have decided to go both directions: from inside out (coming from the needs of a human and from his/her necessity of being happy in life) and from outside in (coming from the current and predicting the future state of the job market).
Also we started our on-site discussion from the etymology of the word “job”/”occupation” in different languages coming to the conclusion that it is necessary to find the new meanings to redefine the roles of humans in the workplace. Imagining ourselves in the year 2027 we were in search of the name/term for those who are in the job/labour market and have come up with such words as “co-creators”, “colleagues”, “shapers”, “enjoyers”, even “fans”. However the term “partners” seemed to be the most powerful one.
This way of thinking about the nature of jobs, looking into the future with the help of our guest speakers and with the help of the research of the PwC (PwC ED Index, where ED stands for Employment Disruption) led all of us towards the Final Perspectives that are now available at the G-20Y Association website.”
